63 Year Forklift Veteran (
05/01/2008 )
They call him ‘Brownie” – he’s R.C. Brown and he’s a road service tech for U.S. Forklift dealer Myers Select Material Handling in Santa Ana, California. There’s nothing unusual about that – EXCEPT he’ll turn 81 years old in 4 months and he’s still going strong.
Long after most road service technicians have turned in their toolbox and service van and hit the road to retirement, ‘Brownie’ is still out on the road, now in his 19th year of meeting Myers Select Material Handling customers maintenance needs. It all started for ‘Brownie’ in 1945 when he was injured serving in the U.S. Navy and while recovering in the hospital began reading up on material handling maintenance information which became a lifelong interest as witnessed by his 62 year (and still counting) material handling career.
‘Brownie’ still puts in a 40 hour work week and has a growing list of loyal customers who specifically ask for him for their maintenance work and have been known to wait up to 2 days until he is available to make the service call. He has seen a lot of forklift technical changes over the years and still tries to learn something new each day. He’s even jumped on the electronic bandwagon with his own laptop computer. Whenever he’s asked about his retirement timetable he responds – “I’ll retire when my hobby becomes my job”.
